Jack was born on a cotton farm in southeast Ellis County in northeast Texas on October 22, 1915. He was the youngest and only son of four children born to Laura Francis and Andrew Jackson Lummus. His birth name was Andrew Jackson Lummus, Jr. Jack attended Ennis High School from September of 1931 through May of 1934. On Friday, January 30, 1942, Jack joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in Dallas, Texas for the duration of the national emergency. He was immediately assigned to active duty. Jack died in the battle at Iwo Jim, he was later laid to rest at Myrtle Cemetery in April 1948. This Memorial Monument to Ennis War Dead is the centerpiece of Jack Lummus Memorial Park. It is 12-feet in height, and made of Texas Granite. It is a four-sides obelisk with the names of 55 Ennis men who gave their lives in the service of their country in the wars of the 20th Century. The monument is topped by a bronze star and the inscription at the base reads as follows: "In Lasting Memory Of Our Fallen Brothers Of Ennis, Texas, Killed In Action, And Their Supreme Sacrifice For Our Nation, 1986."
