Geocache Description:

A cache placed in remembrance of my step-grandfather, J. Morris Scobie.

This totara tree was planted as a memorial to Morris Scobie, a longtime resident of Lake Tarawera. After a long career as a high school principal in Invercargill and Wairoa, Morris and his wife Lyndall retired to a house not far from where the tree and plaque stand.  Morris was an avid amateur historian, and wrote three small books on the history of the area (we recently discovered these can be purchased at the Buried Village).  Morris died in 1992, only a few years after I met him. He is sadly missed.

The cache is a small bison tube, camouflaged to blend in to the surroundings. Please respect the tree and its surrounds during your search.
