Geocache Description:

A lovely walk with superb 360 views of the mountains of Northern Scotland

This cache was hidden on a beautiful sunny Easter Saturday. All the hills were covered in snow which was glinting in the bright Spring sunshine; it was breathtaking. I hope that you all experience such a superb view when you visit. Starting with the view to the North East of the Orkneys (with Hoy in the foreground), then the view along the North Coast of Caithness to Dunnet Head, the ‘Caithness Alps of Scaraben, Maiden Pap and Morven, and on to the South and the twin peaks of Ben Griam Beg and Ben Griam Mor, Creag Mhor and Ben Klibreck and then on to the Mountains of the North Coast, the long ridge of Ben Loyal, the mound of Ben Hope and across to the ridge of Foinaven and finally to Cranstackie and Ben Spionaidh and the ridge to leading down to Durness, then coming back along the coast to Ben Hutig and the Kyle of Tongue with the islands of Ron and Neeve and finally to the mouth of the River Naver. Although this area looks beautiful today, the land is rough and rocky and would have been very inhospitable to those who were cleared from the fertile straths down to this coast during the notorious 19th Century Highland Clearances. The cache is hidden near the top of Cnoc Mor, a distinctive hill above Kirtomy which is home to a communications mast. A good track of about 1.5km (although steep near the top) leads up to the top of the hill. The approach is from the A836 about 4km to the east of Bettyhill. The track is signposted with a small green sign ‘Footpath to Cnoc Mor’. There is parking for a couple of cars by the roadside at the end of the track and there is more parking a couple of hundred metres up the track.
