Geocache Description:

This is a series of 5 caches (plus bonus) of varying sizes hidden along the remaining navigable section of the Cannock Extension Canal.
Parking – I suggest not parking on the A5 but there is parking on the pub car park at the A5 end and possible pull up spots off lime lane at the Pelsall Common end.
Terrain – Towpaths can be a little muddy and at least one bank to scramble up. Obviously quite a lot of water around so be careful with little cachers.

The Canal leads from Pelsall Junction (where it joins the Wyrley & Essington Canal) to the A5 where it is cut off by the road. The Canal was opened in 1863 to serve the Mines/Industry of Cannock and Hednesford. The bulk of the route was closed in 1963 due to mining subsidence.  There is far more information about this canal and local history on the internet than I can list here. Collect Letters/numbers from location to find Bonus Cache.

On the opposite side of the canal near this cache are a few old industrial buildings and a large double basin area. These where part of the old Grove Colliery yard, which was the site of a notable mining disaster which tragically took the lives of 14 miners in 1930. The location is a long demolished railway bridge (which served the mine). The cache is slightly off the towpath and has space for log book only, BYOP!
