Geocache Description:

This is the 7th cache in the 2013 Cache Calhoun GeoTour and is ready for you to find! The first 9 (out of 10) caches can be found in any order.

Access ground zero from the south. Not in the fenced cemetery area, no need to trespass in there. You may want to use bug spray before venturing for this cache!

There is more than a little mystery surrounding the village of Harmonia, and most of what's known about it comes from deeds and abstracts, and a very few diary entries by people who lived here.

Settled by Quakers from New York state sometime in the early to mid-1840s, and later joined by spiritualists (and a few Quakers who converted to become spiritualists), Harmonia at one time boasted an academy, general store, a cemetery and several people who would hold a séance for you.
Harmonia was a progressive community, where women wore bloomers when they first became a fad and dances were held regularly (and men and women fraternized!  How shocking!)  When Sojourner Truth moved into the area in 1857, she first owned a home here in Harmonia.  About 10 years later, she moved into the village of Battle Creek, but her daughter's family continued to live in Harmonia for 30 more years.

It's not known why Harmonia failed to prosper, although a couple of natural disasters and being bypassed by the railroad when it extended past here is usually cited, and what little was left of the village was 'dozed to make way for Camp Custer during WWI, where many troops trained before being sent "over there" to fight, and Prisoners of War were housed during WWII.  Today, the land is in the jurisdiction of the City of Springfield and the barracks of Camp Custer (it was renamed Fort Custer around WWII) that were built in this area are gone as well.  All that's left to mark the passing of a village is the road named Harmonia to the east of here, a very thin scattering of paperwork and, appropriately, this cemetery.
