Ezra Convis was an early settler in Battle Creek, and in 1836 he sold his land in the village of Battle Creek and bought property a mile further upstream on the Battle Creek River. Convis built a dam at a natural waterfall, and a saw mill was erected there. A grist mill soon followed, and Convis began to sell lots in his village, which he called Verona. He had hopes that his village would outshine the village of Battle Creek, and was working towards having a projected railroad line routed near it when he was killed in an accident. Eventually, Verona became a suburb of Battle Creek. The dam is still visible downstream of the cache site, almost to the Emmett Street bridge where the gazebo is on the river walk. The saw mill was on one side of the river and the grist mill on the other.
