ΑΡΧΑΙΑ ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΝΑ (Η ΑΚΡΟΠΟΛΗ ΣΤΟ ΠΥΡΓΙ)
Στις βορειοδυτικές υπώρειες της Ίδης, σε υψόμετρο 380 μ. περίπου, και σε απόσταση 30 χιλ. νότια του Ρεθύμνου βρίσκεται η αρχαία πόλη Ελεύθερνα http://holiday-homes-rethymnon.com/el/2010-01-29-14-25-34/7-2010-01-30-11-07-17.html.
Είναι κτισμένη σε ένα εξαιρετικό περιβάλλον και χρειάζεται χρόνο και υπομονή για να ανακαλύψεις τα μυστικά και τις φυσικές ομορφιές της .
Σε τρεις τοποθεσίες έχουν γίνει συστηματικές ανασκαφές όπου έχει αποκαλυφθεί μέρος της πόλης, της ακρόπολης και της νεκρόπολης της Αρχαίας Ελεύθερνας.
Αλλά ο πεζοπόρος στα όμορφα μονοπάτια της θα συναντήσει διάσπαρτα και άλλα λείψανα του πολιτισμού της. Γι’ αυτό προτείνω να περπατήσετε στο μονοπάτι που βλέπετε εδώ http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=2073726 που θα σας οδηγήσει στα περισσότερα από αυτά.
Την κρύπτη την έχω τοποθετήσει κοντά στα ερείπια που βρίσκονται σε ένα πλάτωμα στο λόφο Πυργί και είναι τα ερείπια της ακρόπολης της αρχαίας Ελεύθερνας. Είναι πάνω στο μονοπάτι Ε4 που συνδέει το λόφο αυτό με τις αρχαιότητες στην ανατολική βάση του λόφου στη θέση Κατσίβελος δηλαδή τα ερείπια της πόλης της Αρχαίας Ελεύθερνας.
Θα αφήσετε το αυτοκίνητό σας στο πλάτωμα που υπάρχει για το λόγο αυτό στο σύγχρονο χωριό Αρχαία Ελεύθερνα και θα περπατήσετε το μονοπάτι που περνά από τον βυζαντινό πύργο και συνεχίζει ευθεία μέχρι τις αρχαιότητες της ακρόπολης. Θα περπατήσετε περίπου 15 λεπτά μέχρι εκεί. Αν γυρίσετε πίσω χωρίς να περιηγηθείτε στα υπόλοιπα μονοπάτια που σας προτείνω μην παραλείψετε γυρνώντας πίσω να στρίψετε για 10 μέτρα στο μονοπάτι που φεύγει δεξιά σας για να δείτε τις δεξαμενές.
Το Πυργί είναι πάνω στο Ευρωπαϊκό Μονοπάτι Ε4. Η κρύπτη είναι μέρος της σειράς E4 CTC που φιλοδοξεί να καλύψει με κρύπτες όλο το μήκος του Ε4 από το ανατολικό ως το δυτικό άκρο της Κρήτης.
Για να βρείτε την έξτρα κρύπτη της σειράς E4 CTC, θα πρέπει να σημειώνετε τα γράμματα που είναι γραμμένα στα σημειωματάρια. Σύντομα η έξτρα κρύπτη θα δημοσιευθεί και θα είναι μία για κάθε νομό.

On the northwestern slopes of Mount Idi, at an altitude of approximately 380 m and 30 km to the south of Rethymnon there is the ancient city Eleftherna http://holiday-homes-rethymnon.com/en/2010-01-29-14-25-34/7-2010-01-30-11-07-17.html.
There are three sites where systematic excavations have revealed part of the city, the acropolis and necropolis of Ancient Eleftherna.
Eleftherna is built in an exceptional environment and requires time and patience to discover the secrets and its natural beauty.
But somebody, who goes hiking along its beautiful paths, also meets other scattered remains of its civilization. So I suggest walking along the path that can be seen here http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=2073726, which will lead you to most of them.
I have placed the cache near the ruins of the ancient acropolis of Eleftherna located on a plateau on Pyrgi Hill. It is on the E4 European path that connects this hill with the ruins of Ancient Eleftherna city at the eastern foot of the hill in Katsivelos. You can leave your car on the plateau in the modern village of Ancient Eleftherna (Αρχαία Ελεύθερνα) and walkalong the path that passes by the Byzantine tower and continues straight to the ancient acropolis of Eleftherna.
It takes about 15 minutes to walk up there. If you don’t wish to hike along all the suggested paths, you could at least follow the path on your right on the way back to your car and visit the rock cut water tanks.
Pyrgi is on the E4 European Trail. The cache is part of the E4 CTC (Cretan Trail Caches) series that plans to place geocaches along the whole E4 trail across the island of Crete.
