Geocache Description:

HMS St. George was a shore based training school on the Isle of Man set up by the Royal Navy in Sep 1939. Most of the classroom training took place at the newly opened Ballakermeen High School while the recruits were housed on a requisitioned holiday camp at Little Switzerland. The Cunningham's Holiday Camp had opened in 1904 on 5 acres of land, split in two by Victoria Road (a tunnel under the road linked the two sections). During World War 1, the camp had been used to house German prisoners and saw several escape attempts and a riot (during which at least 5 prisoners died). As HMS St George, it was used all through the Second World War and was decommissioned in 1945. The holiday camp closed a few years later and most of the site is now owned by Shoprite and has been redeveloped as a business park. All that remains of the area's military history is a plaque about HMS St George in the business park and the air raid shelters a short distance away. The cache is a small roadside nano opposite these shelters (which could hold several hundred people). Unfortunately the shelters are on private property but the entrances can still be seen from the road.

The area can get busy so stealth may be required!!! Parking is available at the nearby supermarket.
