Geocache Description:

Airgead pronounced ‘Arra-gid’ literally means silver but is Irish Gaelic for money. In February 2002 the Euro took over from the Irish currency, the Punt. The quaint pictures and poems on the Irish paper currency ceased to exist. Unfortunately we did not leave any paper money here and we don’t recommend you do either. However, if you are a foreign visitor, especially from outside the EU, please feel free to leave a small denomination coin as it presents an item of interest for others

The former owners of the nearby Hazelwood House, the Wynne family, had a little look out house here. As influential landowners they were allowed to charge toll on the Garavogue River during the busy shipping era of the 1800’s. They had a toll house further along this pathway which is still in existence today. Boats plying their trade inland from Sligo harbour had to pay a toll to the Wynne family when passing this point. It was also possible to get a ferry across the Garavogue River here to cut short the journey via Sligo town if one was hoping to travel South, to Dublin, say.
