There is a fine leisure trail connecting Sligo Town Centre with the recreational amenity near Cleveragh. The new cycling and walking tracks along the Garavogue River and Doorly Park make for a very pleasant 4 km walk/cycle. Try out the high quality outdoor gym alongside Doorly Park or the excellent (and popular) play area. Use the newly developed (bland at the moment) walk opposite the sports centre and return along the lakeside through Doorly Park.
Doorly Park itself was once a wetland and is now a semi-wild landscaped park. It was transformed in the 19th century by Colonel WG Woodmartin. It runs along one of the shortest rivers in Ireland, the Garavogue, about 3km between Lough Gill and the sea. Highlights include reed beds, native woodland and magnificent mountain views. Waterfoul are prominent among the reed beds close to the lake. The park is named after the late bishop of Elphin, Dr Edward Doorly. The cache is contained in a cylindrical plastic box about 4 inches long.
