This easy driveby has been placed as a tribute to two of the most enthusiastic geocachers I have ever met. They took to geocaching like ducks to water and when they took it up it changed their lives, as it did for us all.
Furthermore they love spending time in our area.
Also this is placed in tribute to all of the Servicemen and women from this valley and those whom we particularly remember on ANZAC day.
So this has been published on 25/04/2013.
The cache is on private property and placed with the landowner's permission. Access is granted for foot traffic only.
Good, safe, parking on the East side of SH8. It can be a very busy road so please park where I have suggested. No need then to cross the road at all.
When retrieving or replacing please take care so that no damage is done to any of the plants but that the cache is well hidden.
When placed it contained a number of swaps.
The Roxburgh-Millers Flat district was formerly known as The Teviot. It encompassed Coal Creek, the Knobbies, Roxburgh East, the town of Roxburgh, Hercules Flat, Anderson Flat,Dumbarton, Teviot Settlement, Ettrick, the township of Millers Flat, Minzion, Rigney, Craig Flat and Island Block.
Before the arrival of the pakeha (New Zealanders of Caucasian descent) parties of Maori passed through the district on their way to and from the West Coast where they obtained the greenstone which was much prized for tool making.
That some of the groups spent more than just passing through time is evidenced by the thousands of flint chips found near Gorge Creek. This is believed to have been the site of a Moa hunters camp. All that is left now of those big flightless birds are skeletal remains.
The latter day passerby will be a tourist, a seeker of summer fruits or, not infrequently, a geocacher. We try to cater for all tastes and hobbies.
