Florida Welcomes You is a series of Geocaches located on the east side of the canal between the Allanburg Bridge and the Port Robinson ferry. You can park on the west side by the bridge at N 43° 04.572 W 079° 12.685. After doing the series you can catch the ferry and return along the paved Canal Parkway Trail. You can cache your way back to the parking lot.
In Florida, winter is the best time to see alligators in the wild. Look for them basking along the edge of almost any water body, canals, ponds and even water hazards on golf courses. When we visited Florida, we spent many hours exploring the wildlife in Florida State Parks. One of our favorite parks is the Myakka River State Park near Sarasota. We enjoy canoeing the Myakka River, on a sunny warm day gators line the shore of the river. Another great place to see them is Everglades National Park, at the Shark Valley Loop off the Tamiami Trail. For a real adventure you can rent a bike; if you don’t want to do that you can walk, or take the tram tour. Shark Valley is an alligator bonanza. In winter, the 15-mile paved trail is dotted with alligators basking on the warm black tarmac. They seem to be accustomed to bikes zipping by, but don’t get too close, and never feed or poke at them. They may look sleepy, but they can be fast and dangerous. Congratulations to Kirley227 for FTF Please bring your own pen.
