Soar Valley Ramble: "Old Stumpy" Traditional Cache
BalooCrew: Checked up on this one. The cache is definitely missing. The tree has definitely rotted and deteriorated significantly over the past year, and the original hidey hole has completely rotted away (I guess the cache has gone down deep iside the rotted parts and is definitely not visible or retrievable. Else it has gone AWOL). We will have toarchive this until we can come up with a suitable replacement for the trail.

Soar Valley Ramble: "Old Stumpy"
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
“Old Stumpy” is a micro-cache located alongside the public footpath running through the water-meadows and hillside with fine views between Normanton-on-Soar and Stanford-on-Soar. It contains only a log sheet, so you will need to bring your own pen to sign the log. There may be occasionally be livestock in these fields, so please keep dogs under control at all times.
The Soar Valley Trail, from Normanton-on-Soar to Stanford-on-Soar, is a short series of 5 geocaches laid out along a trail of about 2 km along the Soar Valley,
The trail is entirely along the public footpath, starting near Bowley’s Bridge, Normanton-on-Soar and ending in the village of Stanford-on-Soar. The western end of the trail will take you along the water-meadows adjacent to the River Soar. The middle part of the trail will take you steeply up the subdued and rounded river cliffs on the northern bank of the River Soar to the top of Fox Hill. Here the walk opens up in a very surprising vista affording fine views to the east, west and south over the river, over the Soar Valley towards Loughborough and further in the distance to the Charnwood Hills. Spend some time up here to rest and admire the fine views, or enjoy a picnic at the top of the hill. The eastern end of trail will take you on a footpath that crosses the Great Central Railway – it is an official crossing place but please take care with children to watch out for any trains. Once across the railway line you will have great view across the meadows towards the fine church of Normanton-on-Soar.
There is a small pull-in area to park at the western end of the trail and parking is available at the eastern end of the trail in Normanton-on-Soar. A bus service running between Loughborough and Nottingham serves Normanton-on-Soar, and the bus stops are opposite and adjacent to the church.
Please be warned that in places the trail runs close to the edge of the River Soar , which has deep and sometimes fast-flowing water. Therefore, please take care with children in these parts. Also, please note that the water-meadows (as the name suggests) can be wet and muddy at times and may be flooded periodically when the river overtops its banks after heavy rain or in winter.
This can be combined with "PlasmWave's" "Soar Valley Walk" cache (C2Z8BE) as an extension to the trail and link eastwards with "BalooCrews" "Stanford Stomp" series.
PLEASE REPLACE THIS CACHE EXACTLY AS FOUND AND IN THE SAME HIDING PLACE AND OUT OF DIRECT SIGHT
