Geocache Description:

Placed for the 2013 NWOGEO Spring fling poker run. Cache is a plastic container. Bring a pen(cil)

The Coyote is the most widely distributed carnivore in the Western Hemisphere. They are directly related to the domestic dog. It migrated from the west to replace the wolf population in eastern states. It has adapted to many habitats, and is unconcerned by urban settings. Although it is nocturnal, it will hunt and move during the day.

History

Nineteenth Century

The Coyote was normally found west of the Mississippi River.

Twentieth Century

With deforestation and the extirpation of the Timber Wolf, Ohio became prime habitat for the Coyote. The Coyote expanded its range and moved eastward into Ohio around 1919, with populations growing steadily. Since the mid-1960s, Coyote numbers increased dramatically throughout all the northeastern states.

The Coyote has been blamed for the killing of livestock, in particularly sheep. This normally occurs during the summer when adults need to feed young. However, studies show that livestock makes up only 14% of their diet.

Today Coyotes can be found in all eighty-eight counties, with the greatest abundance in central Ohio
