This woods has a large number of beech trees. The beech tree is most easily identified by it's smooth grey bark the resembles an elephant's legs. Beech bark is extremely thin and scars easily. Since the beech tree has such delicate bark, carvings, such as lovers' initials and other forms of graffiti, remain because the tree is unable to heal itself. These scars can allow a fungal infection to attack and kill the tree.
