Geocache Description:

Even though white-tailed deer are a very common resident of this park, there are many other species of deer that are not seen here. This cache is dedicated to one of those species.

The Key deer is an endangered deer that lives only in the Florida Keys. It is a subspecies of the white-tailed deer. This deer can be recognized by its characteristic size, smaller than all other white-tailed deer. Key deer easily swim between islands. Living close to humans, the Key deer has little of the natural fear of man shown by most of their larger mainland cousins. The deer are often found in residents' yards and along roadsides where tasty plants and flowers grow. This often results in car-to-deer collisions, as the deer are more active (and harder to avoid) at night. It is not unusual to see them at dusk and dawn, Key Deer were hunted as a food supply by native tribes, passing sailors, and early settlers. The hunting of Key deer was banned in 1939, but widespread poaching and habitat destruction caused the subspecies to plummet to near-extinction by the 1950s.

Cache is a small sized, clear container hidden in a typical manner. Please use stealth as you may be seen from the trail. Bring your own writing utensil. Hide back as found and properly concealed.

The cache is located not far from the trail so bushwhacking further than that is not necessary and is discouraged to reduce impact on the environment. Please replace as found. You must sign the logbook in order to claim credit for this find.

Please park at the coordinates shown in the Waypoint table and start your walk at the Trail head coordinates. There are other parking areas and trail access points available also.

Enjoy your walk, hike or bike ride along the "Purr Fect" trail. Plenty of nature's wonders to see along the way. We have placed other caches for you to find while you make your way along this trail!
