What is a Flash Mob?
A flash mob is a gathering of people (geocachers in this case) that meet at a predetermined location at exactly a predetermined time, perform an activity, and then disperse.
What is a World Wide Flash Mob Event?
A geocaching World Wide Flash Mob Event is when hundreds of smaller geocaching events happen all around the world at precisely the same time. At hundreds of individual events all around the world, geocachers will gather in their designated areas at the exact same time, do something for
exactly 15 minutes, and then part ways immediately. This is the 10th WWFM series of events.
Is this like a mega-event?
Yes... sorta... no, not really. In fact, it is almost the exact opposite. Instead of having one giant event, there will be hundreds of smaller events at exactly the same time all around the world.
Will we at least get a souvenir?
Yes, thanks to Podcacher.com, they have arranged for Groundspeak to issue digital
souvenirs for all attendees of a WWFM X event. Be sure to record your attendance online that day!
What is the theme?
For the global event, the theme for this 10th WWFM event is... STAR WARS! May 4th (read as "may the fourth") is often referred to as Star Wars Day because of the similarity to the well-known phrase from the Star Wars films. Some locations will be staging mock light-saber battles or having Star Wars costume contests. For us, we'll be busy doing something else instead! (You are still welcome to wear your favorite Star Wars shirt or costume if you'd like.)
What is the plan?
Just prior to noon, hang around one of the other nearby parks collectively known as Midway Park, drive around, or do something
somewhere else. Please do not show up to the cache site early! Then at precisely 12:00pm (noon), arrive at the cache coordinates, quickly sign the cache log book, and swap geocaching stories for the next 12 minutes. Trash bags will also be available if you'd like to help pick up trash along the lake shore during this time. At 12:13, load your garbage into your own vehicles to remove it from the area if you choose to help in that way, and then gather near the picnic tables for a quick group photograph. Then at 12:15, get in your own vehicles and leave the scene in a safe and orderly fashion--hopefully leaving any passersby wondering why all these people showed up, optionally picked up garbage for 15 minutes, and then just left.
Isn't this like a CITO event?
No, since Groundspeak does not publish flash-CITO events, the purpose of this event is just to gather together for a short 15-minutes of fellowship with other geocachers. If you'd like to pick up trash while you are at it, you are welcome to do so! We always want to leave the areas we cache in cleaner than we found them when possible. This is a great, quick, opportunity to do that while visiting with your fellow geocachers.
What are the rules?
To claim the event, you must be present on time and sign the physical log book.
Do not be
early! Do not be
late!
Picking up trash is
not required.
May the fourth be with you!
