June 1831 was when the first pioneers came into Athens twp. The first sawmill was then built in 1835, by Peter Beisel and Lott Whitcomb. Whitcomb had been the postmaster in Sherwood twp., but when he moved to Athens twp. in 1836 he brought his post office with him. His office was discontinued a few years later, and in 1851 the Pine Creek post office was opened on a trial basis. Letters were carried by the post master once a week to the Abscota post office, 6 miles away. After a year’s trial at this, a regular route was established by the government. A post office in the village of Athens was established in 1860 and kept by AC Waterman. A grist mill was established in 1865 by AC Waterman and James F Halbert.
Bring your own pen. Closed at night.
