You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."**

Geocache Description:

After the recent cache appearing at Hillheads, home of Whitley Bay FC, I felt compelled to place a cache at what was undoubtedly North Tyneside's finest team, the mighty North Shields AFC.  As a kid in the late 80's early 90's I used to love coming to Appleby Park and watching the Robins rise through the league pyriamid system until their demise in 1992.  At that time North Shields had just been promoted to the HFS Loans League and managed by Colin Richardson they had a fantastic squad of players including Barrie Wardrobe, Justin Robson (Brother of Bryan Robson), Graeme Jones (Now assisstant manager at Wigan Athletic) and my personal favourite Neil Howie who scored a brilliant hat-trick against a very strong Leeds United team in a friendly at Appleby Park.

North Shields Athletic moved to Appleby Park in 1900 and developed the stadium on Hawkey's Lane into one of the finest non league stadiums in the country. The 1969 Amateur Cup Final Programme (which Shields won) notes that "Appleby Park is one of the finest grounds in amateur soccer with accommodation for 15,000, dressing-rooms of Football League standard, and a thriving social club."

The stadium was blighted with subsidence problems having been build on the site of a former colliery and it wasn't uncommon for holes to appear in the pitch, one of which developed during the course of a game and resulted in a home player ending up waist high in a hole!

The stadium was eventually sold to developers in 1992 after the club encountered financial difficulties and by 1993 the stadium was replaced by new housing. The site is now replaced with a street named after the old stadium, Appleby Park.

The cache is an easy find in an area that can be busy with muggles and traffic.  You can park a metre or 2 from GZ and could even reach it from your car window if you're that way inclined and your arms are long enough!
