Mmm Fish and Chips Traditional Cache

This cache was going to take it's name from the nearby High Light or from the Fish Quay that it overlooks but when we both got out of the car to place the cache we both said 'Mmm Fish and Chips' because of the fantastic smell coming from below.

North Shields Fish Quay is a fishing port located close to the mouth of the River Tyne.  The quay began life in 1225 as a simple village of shielings (huts) from which the town of North Shields takes its name. The quay was originally located here to serve the nearby Tynemouth Castle and Priory. Because of the difficulty of navigating ships into the mouth of the river past the dangerous Black Midden rocks, buildings were erected with permanent lights burning to be used as a guide by the mariners. The first of these was the Old High Beacon, built in 1727. In 1802, this was replaced by the High and Low Lights, placed respectively at the top and bottom of the steep bank alongside the river. The Old High Beacon, as well as the High and Low Lights, still exist today as private residences. 



The views from next to the High Light, both up and down the river, are amazing.  It is an ideal vantage point to see any of the Cruise Liners, Naval Vessels or Tall Ships that sail into the Tyne.

The cache is an easy find, with parking nearby, although you will have to go down some steep stairs to reach GZ.
