Wairarapa "historic" hotel
The Tin Hut dates from 1857 when it started life as the Tauherenikau Hotel. The name "Tin Hut" comes from 1923 when the original Tauherenikau Hotel was burnt down and a temporary metal clad building was erected as a short term solution to the areas need for a watering hole. At the time of the fire there was considerable concern and a coroner's inquest was held as to its cause. Six witnesses gave evidence and were cross examined by both police and representatives of the insurance company. On conclusion of the calling of evidence the jury retired and returned a verdict "That the Tauherenikau Hotel was burnt down on 11 March and that the fire originated from inside of the store-room of the said house". Please use stealth and care when removing and replacing the cache.
