A row of mature eucalyptus trees in Martinborough
The Wairarapa has numerous stands of mature eucalyptus trees of which this row is one.
There are more than 700 species of eucalyptus mostly native to Australia, with a small number found in adjacent areas of New Guinea and Indonesia. Eucalypts are frequently known as gum trees because they exude copious sap from any break in the bark. On warm days ecaualyptus forests are sometimes shrouded in a smog like mist of vaporised volatile organic compounds ( terpenoids); the Australian Blue Mountains take their name from the haze.
In New Zealand large eucalyptus forests, particularly eucalyptus regnans, and eucalyptus delegantensis to be used as hard wood supplements in the making of quality papers.
The little fellow guarding the cache is a koala often called a "koala bear". Koalas which feed exclusively on eucalyptus leaves are in fact not bears at all but marsupials which means their young are born immature and they develop safely in the safety of a pouch.
Please take care of the little fellow and take care when replacing him in his tree.
