For over thirty years I have been visiting Wilmington NC. I have always wondered about the old tug boat across the river from the water front. I watched it go from a towering wooden vessel to what’s left of her today. This Geocache will bring you close to it. The rising and lowering tide has slowly stolen her beauty from us and each significant storm has battered and bruised the old girl.
Her name is tugboat Isco, which was abandoned there in the 1960s.
While it’s the most visible derelict from the other side of the river, it is one of more than 30 wrecks along Eagles Island, including at least nine tugboats and an assortment of paddlewheel steamers, barges, launches, skiffs and ferries.
Many of the remains of these wrecks today can be seen on a quick paddle from the boat ramp on the Wilmington side of the river.
The cache is on a metal structure close to the tug boat but not on it. You will not have to leave your Kayak to reach it. The changing tide may or may not increase the challenge of this cache.
I have uploaded my Photos from my day on the river, please upload yours also.
