Constructed in the 1830s, this National Historic Landmark was the first temple built by Joseph Smith and his followers as they sought to "restore" primitive Christianity. Distinctive design features include tiers of elaborately carved pulpits on both ends of the large meeting rooms. The temple served as the center of community life for two thousand Latter Day Saints by 1838. Within a year, all but one hundred were gone.
Inspired by the beliefs and practices of the earliest Christians, followers of Joseph Smith, Jr. gathered in Kirtland and built their first temple between 1833 and 1836. Using local sandstone and native timber from surrounding forests, the people worked together to construct what was then one of the largest buildings in northern Ohio.
Now, considered an exciting piece of Western Reserve history, this site is visited by 40-45,000 visitors from all over the world each year.
Take a walk from the Parking Lot at the Visitors Center to the site itself and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings! (Permission was granted for this cache by the site owner.)
