An easy Kaiapoi geocache, created to provide added interest during the CITO event held on the 21st April 2013.
This area of reserve was severely affected by the first of the Canterbury Earthquakes that occurred on the 22nd September 2010. There were vertical cracks all around this area due to the lateral movement of the land towards the river. The stopbank very near to this GZ had a gap over 2.6m deep and 0.5m wide, where it had split longitudinally. As a result of similar land movement on the other side of the river, the river is now over 1m narrower than what it was before the earthquake. The housing areas nearby, on both sides of the river, have been declared "Red Zones" and no buildings are now permitted to be built here. All the houses in the Red Zones are in the process of being bought by the Government and will be demolished and removed. Some sections have already been cleared of their damaged houses.
It will be interesting to see what the Government does with this land that they have purchased.
