Het Noordkasteel was een militair fort dat werd gebouwd in 1862 op het grondgebied van het verdwenen polderdorp Oosterweel. De voornaamste opdracht ervan was de verdediging van de bocht van Oosterweel aan de Schelde te Antwerpen.
Het Noordkasteel verving het kleinere Fort Ferdinand dat in 1812 was opgericht door Napoleon Bonaparte.
Het Noordkasteel was het meest noordelijke fort en het sluitstuk van de vesting rond Antwerpen. Deze vesting werd afgebroken in de 20e eeuw om plaats te maken voor de Ring rond Antwerpen, de R1.
Reeds in 1881 werd een deel van het militaire fort Noordkasteel afgebroken om plaats te maken voor het Amerikadok en het Afrikadok wegens uitbreiding van de haven van Antwerpen.
In 1910 werd het Noordkasteel officieel afgeschreven als militair gebied.
In 2010 bezetten enkele milieuactivisten van groeNoord het Noordkasteelbos. De actiegroep komt op voor alle park- en natuurgebieden die dreigen te verdwijnen voor de "Oosterweelverbinding." (geheel van bruggen en tunnels om de doorstroming van het verkeer rond Antwerpen te optimaliseren)

The North Castle was a military fortress, built in 1862 on the territory of the disappeared poldervillage “Oosterweel”. The main task of which was the defence of the “bend of Oosterweel” at the Scheldt in Antwerp.
The North Castle replaced the smaller Fort Ferdinand that was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1812.
The North Castle was the northernmost fortress and the final part of the fortifications around Antwerp. This fortress was demolished in the 20th century to make way for the Ring around Antwerp, the R1.
Already in 1881 part of the military fortress North Castle was demolished to make way for the “Americadock and the Africadock, due to the expansion of the port of Antwerp.
In 1910 the North Castle was officially written off as a military area.
In 2010, some environmental activists from “Groenoord” occupied the Northcastle forest.
The action group wants to preserve all park- and naturelocations, that risk to disappear for “Oosterweelverbinding”. (combination of bridges and tunnels to facilitate transport around the city of Antwerp)
