The Mazatzals and its Four Peaks, Sierra Ancha, and the Superstition Mountains are all in view. The “Desert to Tall Pines” scenic Highway is an awesome road to travel in Arizona.
The kit fox lives on the open desert, on creosote bush flats, and amongst the sand dunes. There is a significant population of this mammal in the Pinto Basin. Seventy-five percent of sightings are in areas with less than 20 percent vegetation cover. Kit foxes are almost exclusively carnivorous. They seldom need to drink, getting all their water in the food they eat and by having a digestive tract that is super-efficient at absorbing every last milliliter.
The kit fox is mostly a nocturnal animal, but sometimes ventures out of its den during the day. It usually goes out to hunt shortly after sunset, mostly eating small animals such kangaroo rats, cottontail rabbits, black-tailed jackrabbits, meadow vole, prairie dogs, insects, lizards, snakes, fish, and ground-dwelling birds. It will scavenge carrion. While primarily carnivorous, if food is scarce, it has been known to eat tomatoes, cactus fruits and other fruits. Different kit fox families can occupy the same hunting grounds, but do not generally go hunting at the same time.
There is parking on the west side of 288 near the cache. Walking is easy a kid would enjoy this cache, easy find. BYOP
