Geocache Description:

A pair of Giant Redwoods stand guard at this quick cache and dash.

Giant Redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum) or Wellingtonia were introduced commercially to the UK by Cornish botanist William Lobb.

Lobb was a plant collector and employee of the Veitch nurseries based in Budlake, nr Exeter, and Chelsea. Lobb travelled the Americas collecting new species of plants for export back to Britain for cultivation during the mid C19th. During his travels in California in 1853, Lobb was shown a grove of Giant Redwoods by a local hunter and was impressed by their sheer size and saw how these could have an impact on the landscaped gardens of Britain. Lobb rushed home on the next available passage to Exeter with a precious cargo of Giant Redwood seeds, cones and seedlings. Could these two trees, and others to be seen around Exeter, be the product of this first shipment?

Incredibly, Giant Redwoods have been known to live for more than 3000 years!

WARNING: The trees themselves are on private land - no hugging!

The cache is a 35mm film canister and NOT a brown plastic telecommunications box - leave this alone please and trust your gps.
