Geocache Description:

A quick cache, hop and dash or a leisurely stroll along the shore of one of the old fishing villages on the Isle of Lewis.

Portnaguran (Port nan Giùran) is one of the oldest fishing ports on the Eye Peninsula (also known as Point) on the Isle of Lewis. At the turn of the nineteenth century dozens of boats would set sail from here to fish in The Minch or even close to the Scottish Mainland to provide food for the crofting families on this headland. As early as 1828 there were proposals for a pier or harbour to be built here due to the amount of fishing and the matter was explored further with the Napier Commission in the 1880's but it was not until 1952 that the pier was finally built. By then the fishing had declined and the pier was not considered adequate so boats still had to be pulled up on shore.

Today, of course, there is little fishing but a few boats are tied up by the pier and it is a pleasant experience to wander along the harbour wall and to explore the rocky beach. You can even sit in a bus shelter by the pier to eat your sandwiches as the Lewis rain falls! This is, in fact, an ideal cache to reach by public transport unilke many on Lewis.

It is possible to park right beside the cache for a quick 'cache and dash, although it will not be as quick as you might think and the parking is on a sharp bend (not that you get much traffic down here!). Probably better is to drive down to the pier and walk back to the cache. There is plenty of parking there but make sure that you don't obstruct the bus turning point.
