Geocache Description:

One of a series of simple, easy to find, caches at railway stations in and around the Manawatu.

Welcome aboard the WMR service to Wellington! Last stop Whitmore, next stop Tokomaru.

Linton station was named for James Linton, one of the directors of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company (WMR). Linton was a Scottish settler who arrived into New Zealand in 1860 and settled in Palmerston in 1871. He made a name for himself as a Land and Commission Agent auctioneering much of the land sales and became Palmerston's second mayor in 1879. He and his wife Sarah had 13 children!

In 1881 William Travers, the Company Secretary of the fledgling WMR, came to Palmerston to sell the idea of the WMR and to raise the local capital that was much needed to secure the London loan required to make the WMR viable. Linton, the mayor at the time, became an ardent supporter of the railway, knowing it would open up the Manawatu. He was elected as a director, being one of the few to purchase an initial 2000 £5 shares.

Although there was a primary school and church here, Linton township never materialised. The original town map has 37 streets and would take up a space about 2km by 2.5km. Now the Linton area is known for the nearby army training camp, built in 1945, and it's staff residential area, also called Linton. However the station was expanded with a goods shed in 1889 and a cattle yard in 1906 to service the local farming industry and later, the army camp. It was was finally removed in 1986.

For other examples of towns that never materialised, see Cunningham, at the geocache Cunninghams Post Office (Manawatu), and Whitmore, at the cache Manawatu rail: Whitmore.

The cache is a 400ml sistema container. FTF gets to FTF a new TB. Good luck!
