Quendale Water Mill Traditional Cache

Quendale Water Mill is an example of Shetland's industrial heritage. It was commissioned by the local lairds in 1867 and started milling grain the following year, not only for the Quendale estate but also for local crofters. Most of the milling was done in the winter months when water at the dam was in adequate supply to turn the overshot mill-wheel to generate enough powrer to drive thresher, fanners and mill-stones. The mill ceased operations in 1948.
As the cache is located on a working farm it is a credit card sized micro cache hidden out of the reach of inquisitive animal noses! At the time of placing the cache there was a small pencil enclosed but it may be best to bring your own writing implement to sign the log in case the pencil is no longer in the cache or blunt.
The mill is open as a visitor attraction from mid April to mid October and is well worth a visit for its many interesting displays and the chance to absorb the atmosphere of the building which was of great importance not only to Quendale but the whole of the South Mainland of Shetland. Cache placed with kind permission of the landowner.
