The Twin Peaks Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The cache is atop a high volcano with glorious views. This is a serious hike as it involves climbing to the adjacent peak and walking up and down along the ridge linking the two peaks to get to the cache.
Alternatively it can be reached from the other sides of the mountan although there is no information, ratings or advice offered about this route.
The name is derived from the fact that the two peaks have identical heights.
The twin peaks, Morro El Castillejo (the climb) and Morro de Las Tinajas (the cache) are both 542 metres high.
The easiest way to climb to this cache from the parking spot is via the very long ridge to the right of the mountain. Follow the 4X4 track beside the two signposts to the junction with the adjacent barranco. From here go direct, straight up to the long ridge, do not be tempted to cut across the face of the ridge, the face is bisected by dry river beds and covered in loose rocks. Continue along the ridge to the rocky knoll and then onward up to the peak.
This terrain is mostly reasonable although there are two short, steep stretches which require great care. The first is the approach to the knoll which is steep and rock covered, keep close to the two dry river beds and the ascent ( and descent surprisingly) is not too bad. The second is the approach to the peak which is, similarly, very steep and rock covered. You need to search out the bedrock and the occasional small patches of bare earth.
Follow this advice and the climb, while long and steep, is hard work but not overly difficult.
It is definitely recommended that you walk to both ends of the ridge linking the two peaks to fully appreciate the views.
Walking shoes are definitely recommended although it can be managed in stoutly soled trainers. The length of the hike and the two difficult areas mean this walk cannot be recommended for children.
The usual warning certainly applies to this cache, As with all walking in Fuerteventura, because of the rocky terrain, ALWAYS look where you place your feet, if you wish to admire the scenery, stop walking and plant your feet securely.
The cache is hidden near a stone walled circle, inside which is a delightful surprise.
Please ensure that the cache is replaced exactly where it was found, the lid is secured and covered with the rocks.
