Even in summer the Northern Forest is a hostile place beyond belief. I’ve been there, I know, but to go there in winter, well, that would be really foolhardy. But, in exceptional degrees of cold, against worried concerns and better advice, our friend Garth Reeder ventured off for the forest on what seemed a pointless scientific study, all on his own. However, after having heard no news from Garth for over five days we really started to have concerns for his whereabouts. Eventually some Eskimo hunters brought news that they had found canine tracks, a trail of blood and somebody’s discarded back pack in the snow. From the Eastern Province we also heard that more hunters had killed a large wolf, which, on evidence supported by the local villagers, had human blood on it. While such evidence had to be taken with a degree of suspicion, we decided to re-trace its path, re-evaluate the facts and organize a search party. We believed our friend was still out there somewhere, so six brave fellows set off for the point at which the wolf had been killed, with high hopes. Even against all the odds we expected to find Garth, albeit alive or dead. Our intent would be tested, but we were prepared to take our chances, even at the risk of our own lives.
