Geocache Description:

This is a geocache maintained by the 2nd Denton & South Heighton Scout Group. It is unique as it is next to the former home of Ralph Reader -originator of the "Gang Show"

Ralph Reader was born in Crewkerne, Somerset, England, the son of a Salvation Army bandmaster. He was orphaned by the age of eight, and brought up by aunts and uncles. In 1914 he moved to 10 Heighton Road and you can see the front of the house has a blue plaque commemorating him. Joining the Scout Movement at the age of eleven, he began his theatrical career by putting on Scout Shows as a Patrol Leader in the 2nd Denton and Heighton Troop. In 1932, still active in Scouting, Ralph anonymously staged his first all-Scout variety show at the Scala Theatre, London. Entitled The Gang's All Here, the production featured 150 Boy Scouts largely from London's East End, performing sketches, songs and dance numbers. The three performances were well received by both the public and the critics. The following year The Gang Comes Back at the Scala played to capacity houses, with hundreds turned away, and the public and press began referring to "The Gang Show". In 1934 that became its official title. . Recognising the worth of this form of training, Baden-Powell encouraged Reader to continue. He did - and went on to establish the world famous London Gang Show tradition, as well as writing the words and music to hundreds of songs and sketches, including the world famous song "We're Riding Along on the Crest of a Wave” From that small beginning, the Gang Show has become one of the traditions of Scouting and has given Royal Command performances - the only amateur act to ever receive this honour.. Gang Shows then spread quickly to many other countries around the world. It is often said that a Gang Show is playing somewhere in the world every night of the year The shows give young people in Scouting and Guiding the opportunity to develop performance skills and perform in a close to professional theatrical environment. Ralph was awarded the CBE for services to youth as well as the Bronze Wolf, the only distinction of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement for exceptional services to scouting. He died in 1982. The 2nd Denton and South Heighton Scout Group, is still active today, made up of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts who regularly meet at the church hall nearby. The Group is unique in that it is the only scout group in the country to wear an additional name tape “Ralph Reader’s Own” This cache has been created by the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of the 2nd Denton and South Heighton Scout Group who take it in turns to maintain it. Any Scouting related swaps are particularly welcome. The owners of the house are aware of the geocache so do give them a wave if you see them! PLEASE NOTE THE CACHE IS NOT IN THE FRONT GARDEN OF THE HOUSE DO NOT GO THROUGH THE FRONT GATE PLEASE
