Geocache Description:

NOT AT POSTED CORDS

Once upon a time 3 butchers went duck hunting. They were Wolf, an old timer that used a black powder double barrel. Clever, who was a Marine tank commander, and used a 10 gauge cannon. And Lucky Larry, who had a 1912 long Tom that you could load on Sunday and shoot a duck every day for a week. Before development you could still hunt the Wood Lake Marsh. The season opened at 12 noon on the first Saturday in October. The 3 got to the marsh at 9AM to get things ready. As they sat in there blinds they started to count the ducks and geese present. There were 93 Honkers just to the west of them and 44 Mallards to the North. At 11AM it was time to put out the decoys. They had over 54 mallard decoys and 16 goose decoys. All the birds flew away as the decoys were placed but the hunters knew they would return. At 12:15 a flock of two dozen mallards came in and 2 of them ended up dead…one with the cannon and the other with the smoke pole. Shortly after that a flock of 16 geese came over and Lucky Larry shot one of them as the other two were pouring coffee in their mugs. Then a pair of mallards swooped down and Clever shot them both with one blast from his cannon. Wolf was upset that he never got to shoot one of them but just then a lone goose arrived and got both barrels from the old black powder gun. After that they never got another mallard but Lucky Larry shot 7 geese with 7 shots from the Lucky Long Tom 1912 Winchester. The next day the 3 were at the marsh well before sunrise ready to kill some more birds. They put out their decoys and waited for daybreak. Cleaver found one more goose decoy in his garage so they now had 17. The dog ate one of the mallard decoys so that number was now 53. Just as the sun was coming up a large flock of mallards came out of the glare and they all missed every shot. Then it was decided that they would take turns on the geese and watch the others shoot so they put a wager on the goose shooting. First up was Lucky Larry and he got 4 geese on 4 shots on the first bunch that came in. Then it was Clevers turn and he got 4 on one shot with the big old cannon. Not to be out done old Wolf got 4 with both barrels of the old double so the money went to Clever as he used the fewest shots to win the tiebreaker. Now it was on to getting the ducks. They decided to only shoot the big greenhead mallards today. The first big flock came over and they all fired one shot at the same time and 7 were belly up in the decoys. Shortly after that 4 big greenheads came in and all of them got clobbered. Then they saw it was lunch time so they had one of their favorite snacks, herring in tomato sauce with club crackers. They then shot the BS for a while and packed up and went home.
