Does Weather Affect Your GPS? Let's Find Out Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

the tc life: This one along with a cache that was nearby have become problem childs. Not sure if someone in the area is messing with the caches but either way, they are now problems maintaining. Too bad.

Geocache Description:

Adopted by the tc life on 5/29/16

The purpose of this cache is to show that weather does not affect gps reception.  Do a Google and read all you want.  The myth has been used by many when placing a cache that has bad coordinates.  "It was a cloudy day so the coords might not be right" or by seekers using a cloudy day for not being able to find a cache.

On the other hand there is something that does affect accurate reception and most people are never aware of it.  It's called a Geomagnetic Storm and with the sun going to it's peak in the 11 year cycle the conditions are very much changing.

"A solar storm is a stream of charged particles—electrons and protons—that flows from the sun's surface at close to the speed of light," says Chris Palma, outreach fellow in the Penn State astronomy department. "There is a constant flow of charged particles from the sun, but during a solar storm, the intensity can increase immensely. The energy released during such a storm is equivalent to millions of times more than is released during a volcanic eruption on Earth." These particles affect the operation of satellites orbiting Earth, generating radio waves that interfere with the signals that transmit location information from those satellites to your GPS receiver."

At the posted coordinates you will find a small plastic test strip container at the bottom of the post. It is requested but not required that you set your GPSr on the fence post, let it sit for 30-60 seconds, make note of the coordinates it is showing and post them along with the weather (blue sky, clouds, rain, snow, sleet what ever) at the time of your visit. Yes there are trees in the area but they will be the same for everyone. Weather is what we are looking for.

The coordinates for this cache were taken a long time ago for a previous cache here and another six sets when this one was planted. They all averaged out the same as the posted ones.

No room for trades and bring your own writing stick as a good cacher always does.
Except my good friend White.Trash that never does. :)

Congrats to TLC and Foxy Lady for their FTF and report!!.
