Geocache Description:

Note the carefully laid out streets, street lights that shine light on vacant lots and phone lines that will never receive a call. What happened here? Read on to find out more.

West Wyalong started up as a mining town. Around the corner on the main street you can see the precarious fencing keeping people away from an original mine shaft. In operation from 1890 to 1925, it goes down 800ft, with other sections going down to 1200ft. I have heard you can travel from that mine, under the town of West Wyalong, and end up out at the saleyards near GC3XAEW.

But back to the story of this ghost town. The story goes: prior to 2004, the land here was subdivided, roads built with kerb and guttering (and underground drainage! A rarity in this town) and all else you can see. But somehow it was discovered that the land here was too prone to mine subsidence to allow houses to be built here. And so it has been left as you find it. During the construction phase of the Cowal Gold Mine there was temporary housing in this area, but that was all packed up years ago now.

Cache is a medium container. Please re-cammo when you are done.
