Geïnspireerd door een mede-cacher (bedankt nog!)
Rond 1900 verrees tussen de grens van Haarlem en Schoten de Transvaalbuurt. Aansluitend op de bouw activiteiten werd ook een deel van de Indische buurt uit de grond gestampt.
Rond 1917 werd de slachthuisbuurt volgebouwd. Tussen 1921 en 1923 werd ten noorden van de Kloppersingel de Patrimoniumbuurt gebouwd. Door ruimtegebrek werd besloten de woningbouwverenigingen in het agrarische Schoten te bouwen.
Als eerste werd de bomenbuurt gebouwd. Dit breidde zich verder uit naar het noorden. In 1927 annexeerde de gemeente Haarlem de gemeente Schoten. Met de inlijving van Schoten kreeg Haarlem voldoende ruimte om verder uit te breiden.
Om te voorkomen dat het gehele gebied zou worden losgebouwd werd gesteld dat er een tweetal groenstroken van oost naar west moet worden gehouden. De eerste was er al. Dit was de Algemene Begraafplaats en de stadkweektuin.
De tweede was gepland ten zuiden van de Jan Gijzen vaart. Deze twee kregen de vorm van het Schoterbos en het Noordersportpark. Verder werden door woningbouwverenigingen en eigenbouw in een snel tempo nieuwbouw woningen opgeleverd.
Het gebied tussen Spaarndam en de Vondelweg mocht door het ministerie van Defensie niet worden volgebouwd. Dit houd verband met de stelling van Amsterdam. Na de tijd van de Conrad werf (zie foto’s) is de haven gedempt en is het Nelson Mandela park ontstaan. Dit wordt geherstuctureerd en zal een wat centralere plaats in gaan nemen in het buurtleven van Zuid Haarlem-Noord.
