Welcome to the TJ Dolan Natural Area. Stratford has a wonderful parks system, most communities do these days, but Stratford's began long ago. A quote from the City of Stratford website gives us some history:
By 1870, the need for a major park for the growing town became linked with the need for a town cemetery. A large piece of land at the west end, constituting the new Avondale Cemetery northwest of the Avon and the T. J. Dolan Natural Area (formerly The Old Grove) southeast of the Avon, was purchased by the town. Although disrupted recently for installing underground services, the natural area has been replanted. A nice little traditional cache, in a nice old part of Stratford. Enjoy the hike through the Old Grove! We certainly enjoy it! This is a nice little spot above the water treatment plant. It is a hidden little area with some great trails nearby. While hiking around back here we found this little squishy crawly creature. He agreed to hold onto a log for us as well as any other items anyone wanted to give him! He is very kind! Enjoy your visit! Be sure to hide as well or better than you found it! Enjoy! :)
