You are seeking a short two stage multi cache in one of the most enjoyable cemeteries to visit in Tuscaloosa. The Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery is a pleasure to visit, and grab a cache or two.
The coordinates will take you to a memorial marker for Joseph Hardin, a Veteran of the Revolutionary War. Joseph is not buried here but instead rests in Cowden Cemetery, a small cemetery just off to the side of Highway 43 North near the Old Fayette Road intersection.
Joseph Hardin was born July 3, 1760 in what was Orange County, in the North Carolina Colony. He moved around the southeast, living in Anderson County, Tennessee, then in Franklin County, Tennessee before moving to Tuscaloosa County in the Alabama Territory.
In 1781 he enlisted as a Private in the North Carolina Militia. Private Hardin served in Captain Hugh Beaty's Company of Richard Singleton's Battalion of William Porter's North Carolina Regiment. He volunteered shortly after Tarleton’s defeat and fought “against the Indians and Tories for eight months”. He ranged the country skirmishing with the Indians. Private Hardin also served as spy under Captain William Smith. Serving as a spy during the Revolutionary War is much different than what we now consider to be a spy; then spies were those that gathered intelligence on the enemy.
To locate the final, gather information from his marker.
