Geocache Description:

This Cache is intended intended to give the you a brief introduction to the history of 'The Grand old Lady of the Mountains' - The Carrington Hotel. Built in 1882, with very little else in the area, it stood out on the Katoomba landscape way back then and still does to this very day.

History of the site - In 1882 'The Great Western Hotel' was constructed (Renamed 'The Carrington' four years later)

Katoomba Station mid 1880s

As can be seen in the above photograph, is certainly was centre piece of Katoomba back in the mid 1880's, and still is today.

The Chimney

The chimney you see at GZ, was completed in 1913, to produce electricity for the Hotel, though before long - The Carrington was also supplying power to the railway station along with local business. It is understood that the chimney was made this big, as the owner didn't want soot and ashes falling over his guests as they relaxed in the gardens.

Myths & Legends

There is a few stories regarding underground tunnels connecting 'The Carrington' to various locations throughout Katoomba One myth in particular states that a tunnel connects right through to Echo point (pull the other one). Other tunnels are said to connect 'The Carrington' to the old Convent (Unlikely), one that may have existed is a tunnel across to the Savoy Theater (across the road and a few doors up). The existence of any tunnel (existing at any time) has not been disproved nor proven. Feel free to do your own research or even ask at reception?

The Carrington Hotel has become a legend, with its high ceilings and old-world grandeur and guests including royalty and the famous from many walks of life. In recent years it has been re-furbished with more work being done
