Geocache Description:

This is a series of caches that will allow you to feel like a Railroader! Don't drive FAST!!! There is the occasional 'bridge' and some of them are OUT! If there is stuff in the road, That is where it is OUT! If there's not stuff in the road, then you MIGHT be able to get thru it.

This is the First cache for those of you working from Rock Springs to Atlantic City. Of course, this could Also be your Last cache of the series. If this is your First cache in the series, pick up a couple 35mm canisters for any issues you find along the route. If this is your last, then drop off any extras you still have.

Ghost Road to Atlantic City

South Pass was used by United States Steel to reach their Atlantic City iron ore mine. This 76 mile railroad was operated between August 1962 and October 1983. The crossing was at 7550' and the mine was at 8430'.

America's railroads built 31 crossings over the Divide, of which 10 other crossings remain in use.

Things to keep in mind for the entire series:

1) Bring and use Gloves. Many of the caches are in rock piles next to bushes.
2) Bring FOOD AND DRINK with you. It may take you longer than you expect.
3) Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to be back. There is Little to NO CELL SERVICE for most of the route.
4) Fill your Gas Tank(and maybe a spare in the trunk) if you're doing the entire thing in one go.
5) Check all your fluids and bring extras!
6) Expect to do some driving around occasionally. Though the trail looks strait forward, there are a few challenging points. Reference Points have been added to the caches closest to where the various roads access the trail. See Below for the list.
7) There MAY be other access points, but I didn't check them out. IF you find one that should be added, note it on your log.
8) Do the first 7 caches(after here) by Walking from GC48GHW. Driving around takes MUCH longer than the walk would take. There is NO East access to those either.
9) The Attributes used on this cache do apply to the entire series. For a few caches, there are additional attributes that apply to only the caches in that area.

Geocaches with Reference Points for road access:

NOTE: Only use these or roads that are graded regularly to access the trail.
