Hellfire Pass (Thai: ช่องเขาขาด) is the name of a railway cutting on the former "Death Railway" in Thailand which was built with forced labour during the Second World War, in part by Allied prisoners of war. The pass is noted for the harsh conditions and heavy loss of life suffered by its labourers during construction. Hellfire Pass is so called because the sight of emaciated prisoners labouring at night by torchlight was said to resemble a scene from Hell. The Australian, British, Dutch, other allied prisoners of war, along with Chinese, Malays and Tamil labourers, were required by the Japanese to complete the cutting. 69 men were beaten to death by Japanese guards in the six weeks it took to build the cutting, and many more died from cholera, dysentery, starvation, and exhaustion.
"ช่องเขาขาด" หรือ "ช่องไฟนรก" เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเส้นทางรถไฟสายไทย-พม่า (เส้นทางรถไฟสายมรณะ)ตลอดเส้นทางรถไฟสายไทย-พม่า (เส้นทางรถไฟสายมรณะ)มีหลายจุดที่มีเนินหิน ภูเขา หน้าผา หรือหุบเหว ขวางอยู่จึงต้องขุดให้เป็นช่องเพื่อที่รถไฟสามารถวิ่งผ่านไปได้ซึ่งที่ช่องเขาขาด หรือ ช่องไฟนรก เป็นจุดที่ใหญ่ที่สุดบนเส้นทางนี้ การขุดเจาะช่องเขาขาดเริ่มในเดือนเมษายนปีพ.ศ. 2486 ปรากฏว่างานล่าช้ากว่ากำหนดจึงมีช่วงที่เร่งงานซึ่งแรงงานแต่ละกะต้องทำงานถึง 18 ชั่วโมงโดยงานส่วนใหญ่ล้วนใช้แรงคนทั้งสิ้น เช่นการสกัดภูเขาด้วยมือ ซึ่งเป็นการทำงานที่ทารุณยิ่ง เนื่องจากต้องปีนลงไปสกัดในช่องเขาซึ่งบางช่วงสูงถึง 11 เมตร จนแทบไม่มีอากาศหายใจทั้งยังต้องทำงานท่ามกลางอากาศร้อนอบอ้าวในช่วงเดือนมีนาคม ในภาวะขาดแคลนน้ำและอาหาร เมื่อเจ็บป่วยแพทย์และอุปกรณ์ทางการแพทย์ก็ไม่เพียงพอต่อการพยาบาลต้องดูแลกันตามมีตามเกิด เชลยศึกและกรรมกรที่ช่องเขาขาดต้องทำงานตอนกลางคืนด้วยแสงไฟจากคบเพลิงและกองเพลิงทำให้สะท้อนเห็นเงาของเชลยศึกและผู้คุมวูบวาบบนผนังทำให้ที่นี่ได้รับการขนานนามว่า "ช่องไฟนรก" หรือ Hellfire Pass ในภาษาอังกฤษ
It is quite eery to imagine the harsh conditions and loss of life that resulted from this construction. The pain and sorrow at the hands of the Japanese must have been tremendous. It is only fitting to have a cache here to encourage others to see what sacrifices were made in Thailand during the second world war. There is a Hellfire Pass Museum which costs 150b. It is not necessary to pay this entrance fee to access the pass, or the cache. I did not enter the museum, so I cannot comment on whether it is worth seeing. Happy Caching
