Il miracolo della Madonna del Fuoco, Patrona di Forlì

La devozione alla Madonna del Fuoco cominciò molti anni fa, nel 1428, quando accadde il miracolo del quale furono testimoni tanti forlivesi. Nella notte tra il 4 e il 5 febbraio scoppiò un incendio che distrusse una scuola sita nell’attuale via Cobelli, dove si trova oggi la chiesina del Miracolo. In quella scuola insegnava da poche settimane mastro Lombardino da Riopetroso. Non si sa molto di questo maestro: era arrivato a Forlì all’inizio di quell’anno dal suo paese di Valbona ed aveva insegnato ai suoi alunni non solo a leggere e a scrivere ma anche a pregare davanti all'immagine della Madonna che si trovava nella scuola. Si trattava di un disegno, più precisamente di una xilografia, cioè un disegno stampato che raffigurava la Madonna circondata da tanti Santi.

Quando la scuola bruciò i forlivesi si accorsero con stupore che l’immagine della Madonna era rimasta intatta, non si era bruciata e non era neanche annerita dal fumo. Pochi giorni dopo, l’8 febbraio, l’immagine venne portata in processione fino alla vicina Cattedrale e sistemata prima accanto all’altare maggiore poi nella cappella che le venne dedicata e dove si trova ancora oggi. Nel corso dei secoli i forlivesi sono accorsi attorno alla Madonna non solo in occasione della festa, il 4 febbraio, ma tutte le volte che hanno affrontato difficoltà e pericoli, come durante le guerre e i terremoti affidandosi a lei come Madre e Patrona.

Sono nate anche delle tradizioni particolari legate alla festa come quella della Fiorita alla colonna della Madonna del Fuoco in piazza del Duomo dove si fermò a pregare con i bambini anche il papa Giovanni Paolo II quando venne in visita a Forlì nel 1986. Altre tradizioni sono quelle di accendere i lumini alle finestre la sera della vigilia e quella di mangiare la “piadina della Madonna” il 4 febbraio.

Nota: è possibile visitare la chiesina del Miracolo citofonando al campanello adiacente e facendo richiesta direttamente al parroco (se presente).
Inoltre consiglio di visitare il Duomo in cui però si potrà ammirare l'immagine sacra solamente durante le celebrazioni o su richiesta (per motivi legati alla conservazione dell'opera).

The miracle of Our Lady of Fire, Patron Saint of Forlì

The devotion to Our Lady of Fire began many years ago, in 1428, when many people in Forlì witnessed a miracle that took place in the night between the 4^th and the 5^th of February. That night, a fire broke out in a little school located in the current via Cobelli and destroyed it completely. The teacher in that school was Lombardino da Riopetroso, who had been working there since a few weeks before. We don’t know very much about him: he was born in a village called Valbona and then moved to Forlì at the beginning of 1428. He taught the students not only to read and write, but also to pray in front of an image of the Virgin Mary situated in the school. It was a xylography - also known as woodcut, a printed image - representing the Virgin surrounded by some Saints.

A lot of inhabitants rushed to the school on fire as soon as they saw what was happening and they notice, to their surprise, that the image of the Virgin was amazingly undamaged. It hadn’t been burnt by the fire and not even blackened by smoke. A few days later, on the 8^th of February, the printing was carried in procession to the Cathedral and placed on the high altar. Then, people decided to move it to a chapel consecrated to the Virgin Mary where it is still located today. Over the centuries the local inhabitants have turned to the Lady of Fire not only on the patron saint's feast day (4th of February), but every time they have had to face problems or dangers - such as wars and earthquakes.
In 1819 a little church was built in the area of the destroyed school and it was called Church of the Miracle.

Many traditions in Forlì are related to this feast, such as the “Fiorita” - a celebration in which children leave some flowers and drawings by the column of the Lady of Fire outside the Cathedral, offering them to the Virgin Mary. Pope John Paul II also participated in a “Fiorita” in 1986 and prayed with children near the Cathedral.
Other traditions are to light votive candles the evening before the feast and to eat a typical sweet piadina containing anise - called “piadina della Madonna del Fuoco” - on the 4th of February.

Note: you can visit the church of the Miracle ringing the bell and asking it to the priest.
Also recommend you visit the Cathedral but where you can admire the sacred image only during celebrations or on request.
