Given the current economic gloom I thought it was time to cheer everyone up with a happy smiley puzzle cache. Forget about the double-dip recession and enjoy solving this instead.

Did you know that:

  • the first happy face appeared on film in Ingmar Bergman's 1948 film "Hamnstad"
  • the happy face was first introduced into popular culture in 1962 as part of a promotion by New York radio station WMCA
  • the happy face graphic was popularized by Philadelphia brothers Bernard and Murray Spain, who seized upon it in September 1970 in a campaign to sell novelty items
  • Franklin Loufrani introduced the happy face to a European audience in 1972, giving it the name "smiley".
