Geocache Description:

This is a series of multi-caches that I intend to place around the rural churches of North Monmouthshire. There are so many lovely churches around the area that are undervisited, so I hope to attract a few more visitors to these great spots. I shall start off with a few and hope to add to the series as I go along.

All of the caches start at the church where you need to find the answers to a couple of questions to allow you to find the final cache position, and none are intended to be particularly difficult (I would prefer you to find the caches) or are more than 1/2 a kilometre from the church.

This cache is the sixteenth in the series and starts at St Mary's church in Tregare. The co-ords given are for a tiny pull-in next to the small village hall but you may be better of parking down the road on the verge at N51 47.241 W002 50.656 (that's where I parked).

Tregare is a tiny village north or Raglan and the church is similarly small in scale, but consists of a nave, chancel, porch and tower. The stone steps that originally led to the rood loft are still here too (similar to many churches in this area) and the chancel still retains it's piscina basin near the alter. The tower is interesting in that it is constructed as an integral part of the main building and the tower also boasts five bells which is a large amount for a church of this size. The church was restored in 1888 but there appears to be little record of what work was actually carried out.

Although compact this church retains much of it's rural charm and reminds me of the reason that I started of this series last year.

To find the whereabouts of the final cache location look for the answers to the questions below and replace the letters for the appropriate numbers in the co-ords at the bottom. So here we go:

Go in the small gate that opens directly from the road and head along the obvious path to the porch. To your left you will see the restored cross on the much older base. What date was the cross restored? 192A

Take a look in the porch. How many benchs? B

Now head to the far (tower) end of the church where you will see two small gravestones that, unusually, only have two initials and a date on. How many letter M's are there on the two stones? C

What is the date on both stones? 1DE3

If you head round the corner of the church/tower you quickly come to a outward corner that has symbol carved into the stone about two and a half foot above ground level, which is made up of a horizontal line with a number of lines below. How many lines below the horizontal? F

On the top of the tower is an animal. If it is a bull then G=9, if it is a lion G=7, if it is a cockerel G=4

So replace your answers in this co-ord and go get the cache! Final position is N51° (E-C)(F+G).FGE W002° E(D-A-B).AC(D-G)

The cache is a camouflaged specimen container. As usual please tuck in after you have found it.
