Geocache Description:

This is a series of multi-caches that I intend to place around the rural churches of North Monmouthshire. There are so many lovely churches around the area that are undervisited, so I hope to attract a few more visitors to these great spots. I shall start off with a few and hope to add to the series as I go along.

All of the caches start at the church where you need to find the answers to a couple of questions to allow you to find the final cache position, and none are intended to be particularly difficult (I would prefer you to find the caches) or are more than 1/2 a kilometre from the church.

This cache is the fourteenth in the series and starts at St. Michael's church in the hamlet of Llanvihangel-Ystern-Llewern (the title spacing for this cache wouldn't allow me to add such a long name!). The hamlet is about four miles west of Monmouth.

More correctly the church has the dedication of 'St. Michaels of the Fiery Meteor' (which is probably one of the best I have ever heard of!!) and consists of the standard nave, chancel, porch and western tower/turret typical of the early English design of it's construction. The turret is interesting in it's stone construction topped of with the wooden lantern style that is common in this area and houses three bells currently.

It was subject to restoration in 1874-75 for the grand sum of £800.

To find the whereabouts of the final cache location look for the answers to the questions below and replace the letters for the appropriate numbers in the co-ords at the bottom.

So here we go:

As you head up the path towards the church look up to the top of the tower. How many double windows are there on one side of the tower? A

Head round to the porch, how many white panels are there on the inside of the porch roof? B

Now look to the right of the porch and you will see some ventilation holes near the base of the church in the shape of rounded crosses. How many can you see from there? C

Now head round the church - how many of those rounded-cross holes are there (do not include the destroyed one)? D

How many buttresses are there supporting the church? E

Take a look to the top of the tower and you will see a metal cross. How many rings are there on this cross? F

So replace your answers in this co-ord and go get the cache! Final position is N51° F(B+E).C(D+E)D W002° 4(D+A).AEC

You are looking for a 35mm film pot type container - please re-attach securely.

If you fancy it you can take a short walk up the hill to see some decent views to the north which take in Sugar Loaf, the Skirrid, the Graig and Pen y Gadair in the Black Mountains (the hedge was low enough when I placed the cache!).
