Geocache Description:

The Medal Of Honor, the nation’s highest honor that can be bestowed upon members of the military for acts of conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty. Some recipients are well known.. Alvin York, Audie Murphy, Teddy Roosevelt and Jimmy Doolittle to name a few. Most of the recipients names are not so well known, William "Willie" Johnston, the youngest recipient, was only 12 years old when he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Civil War. Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, the only female recipient, was also awarded the Medal of Honor for her actions during the Civil War. In all, 3459 individuals have been awarded the Medal of Honor, 19 of them were double Medal of Honor recipients; 5 Marines in WWI were awarded a Navy and an Army Medal of Honor for the same act of heroism as they were working with the Army at the time they distinguished themselves. However, 14 of the double recipients were awarded a second Medal of Honor for a second separate act of heroism. There have been 2 sets of father and son recipients, 1LT Arthur MacArthur & General Douglas MacArthur, and, LTC Theodore Roosevelt & BG Theodore Roosevelt Jr. Additionally, there have been 5 sets of brothers who were recipients of the Medal of Honor.

This cache will have you walking among the names of these heroes enshrined in The Medal Of Honor Grove at the Valley Forge Freedom Foundation. The wooded grove is divided into sections for each of the 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. The Ancient Order of Hibernians erected a monument dedicated to the more than 150 recipients who did not have a home state. Each recipient is identified by a marker with the name and organization of each recipient along with the date and location of the act of valor. FTF will need to contact me as the unique coin for the FTF cannot fit in the container.

Cache in and trash out. If you bring your dog, please clean up any waste. The Medal of Honor Grove is open to the public 7 days a week from dawn til dusk. Night caching is not permitted at this location.
