Geocache Description:

Another cache in Trafford Park - this one next to St Antony's church, Village.

In the early days of Trafford Park becoming a centre for industry, George Westinghouse decided to base his new factory here (see caches http://coord.info/GC3YT52 and http://coord.info/GC3YT5C for more info). Following his American roots, he also built a village for his workers - hence the area around the cache is still called 'Village'. He based it on the US-style grid system and it included housing, shops, schools, a cinema and of course a church - two in fact, St Antony's and St Cuthbert's. Most of the housing here was demolished in the 1970s and 80s but many of the other buildings still exist - the school was converted to residential dwellings and some of the shops still serve the area. The building of St Cuthbert's is still there between Third and Fourth Ave but is no longer a church.

St Antony's, however, was built as a temporary structure in 1904... but it still remains! The green cladding was added in 1994; it is a simple chapel that has survived the wars. According to http://dioceseofsalford.org.uk/closed-churches-and-chapels?start=9, "The mission was founded to serve the residents of the newly built Westinghouse Village. The iron chapel was opened in 1904. The demolition of the Trafford Park Village during slum clearances in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s left St Antony’s without a resident population and the Parish was adapted to serve as the UK’s first and only Industrial Chaplaincy. The church closed in 2009. The buildings have been retained by the Diocese and will be adapted for use by the Centre for Church and Industry. Registers are at St Ann’s, Stretford."

Lots more info about the Village, with photos of the area, can be seen here: http://manchesterhistory.net/manchester/outside/village.html, http://manchesterhistory.net/manchester/gone/metrovicks.html, and in the heritage centre opposite the church.

Apparently St Antony is the patron saint of 'lost things' - so I hope you manage to find the cache and that it doesn't go missing! The cache itself is now a micro containing only a log - please replace carefully.

In terms of parking - there is a car park around the corner (marked as a waypoint) or there are some on-street parking options, depending on how busy it is!

The Big Smiley goes to JenJ57 and tony1x1 for the FTF... congrats. :-)
