You are looking for a regular size Lock&Lock in Pemberton Park. Park Hours: Dawn to Dusk


PEMBERTON HISTORICAL PARK:

Pemberton Historical Park, is comprised of 262 acres of forest, field and wetland habitats with 4.5 miles of nature trails.

While hiking the trails, you will encounter ecosystems and their natural complement of plants and animals indigenous to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Tidal and fresh water wetlands, fresh water ponds, upland pines, hardwood forests and meadows are all found here at Pemberton Park.

Red Eyed Vireo, painted turtles, frogs, deer, Great Blue heron, and a bald eagle are just some of the wildlife you might see during your visit.

PONDSIDE TRAIL:

The Trail Guide states: "The Pondside Trail begins at the Nature Trails Kiosk and circles around the Bell Creek pond. As you walk along its length, you can see wonderful examples of local wildlife, such as freshwater turtles, bullfrogs, darting dragonflies and damselflies, ducks, geese, bluegills and other fish. Watch for raccoon tracks along the pond's edge. On the east side of the pond, a wildflower meadow blooms in season. Pause to enjoy the peaceful Sarbanes Memorial Grove, a gift from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to honor a prominent Salisburian, Matina Sarbanes. Stop at the picnic area and view the bald cypress tree growing on the small pond island. Native bald cypress trees on the Eastern Shore are near the northern limit of their range here."

PEMBERTON HALL HISTORY:

Isaac Handy, the 13th child of Samual and Mary Handy, went to live with his older brother in Bermuda at age 13. He was trained as a mariner and ship master of the sloop Samuel and Mary.

When Isaac reached his majority in 1726 he returned to join his older brothers along the banks of the Wicomico River (then known as the "Rockawalkin River"). He married Anne Dashiell, and acquired 960 acres of undeveloped land from Joseph Pemberton. At the time of his purchase, opposite his new holdings, on the southern bank of the river, was "Tondotank Indian Town" part of a reservation established by the Provincial Assembly.

Through hard work, industry and his advantageous marriage, Isaac began to rise in society and to become very prominent in the community of the Lower Eastern Shore. In addition to owning interests in 3 ships, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace (combination of judge and commissioner), colonel in the Somerset militia, and a member of the Provincial Assembly in Annapolis. He was one of the founders of the City of Salisbury, as well. Isaac, along with four others, was appointed to purchase the land and to lay out "Salisbury Town" in 1732.

In 1741 Isaac completed construction of his new brick, plantation house, to be named Pemberton Hall. It was built to be an expression of his perceived prominence in the community. All of the components utilized in the building, except for the window glass and iron hardware, were created on the Plantation including the thousands of bricks needed for laying the walls. Building Pemberton Hall was a way to show off the status and wealth that he had achieved and it was a major undertaking for this period in time and place. The Hall or Great room in Pemberton Hall would have been twice the size of the entire house for 90-95% of the people of the Chesapeake Bay region of the early to mid eighteenth century.
